Background of the Study
Deforestation, the large-scale removal of trees from forests, has become a critical environmental issue with profound effects on biodiversity, climate regulation, and human livelihoods. Forests play an essential role in supporting agriculture, providing fuelwood, and maintaining ecological balance (Food and Agriculture Organization [FAO], 2024). However, deforestation driven by agricultural expansion, logging, and urban development has led to significant land degradation, water shortages, and loss of wildlife habitat (United Nations Environment Programme [UNEP], 2023).
Plateau State, located in north-central Nigeria, has long been known for its rich forest reserves and agricultural productivity. However, increasing deforestation, largely due to farming activities, timber exploitation, and fuelwood collection, has resulted in soil erosion, declining crop yields, and disrupted local weather patterns (Federal Ministry of Environment [FME], 2024). Many rural communities depend on forests for their livelihoods, relying on forest products for income generation, medicine, and energy. The depletion of forest resources threatens these livelihoods, forcing communities to adapt to worsening environmental conditions.
While government policies and conservation efforts have been introduced, the rate of deforestation in Plateau State continues to rise. There is a need for a comprehensive evaluation of deforestation and its socio-economic effects on rural livelihoods. This study aims to analyze the drivers of deforestation, its impact on local communities, and potential strategies for sustainable forest management.
Statement of the Problem
Deforestation in Plateau State has led to severe ecological and socio-economic consequences. Rural communities that once relied on forest resources for food, fuel, and income are now facing livelihood disruptions due to declining forest cover (FAO, 2024). Soil degradation caused by deforestation reduces agricultural productivity, exacerbating food insecurity and poverty in affected areas. Additionally, the destruction of natural watersheds has contributed to water shortages and increased vulnerability to climate change impacts (UNEP, 2023).
Despite awareness of these issues, deforestation continues at an alarming rate, driven by economic pressures, weak law enforcement, and inadequate reforestation initiatives. Current policies have been insufficient in curbing illegal logging and promoting sustainable land-use practices. This study seeks to evaluate the extent of deforestation in Plateau State and its effects on rural livelihoods, providing insights for policymakers and environmental advocates.
